The tourist board of the Dominican Republic might have been staying in La Romana when they coined the area’s slogan, “The Dominican Republic has it all.” On our recent trip to La Romana we had an action-packed family holiday, filled with everything from exciting adventure to quiet evenings together. We can’t stop raving about La Romana as a family holiday destination – and here’s seven reasons why you too should visit La Romana on your next family trip!
It is so nice to visit places where the locals really make you feel welcome. We received such a warm greeting in La Romana, and our kids especially were made to feel really special! The Dominican culture is very warm and hospitable, especially to families, making it the perfect place to visit with kids.
La Romana has a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that was just perfect. While there are certainly parts of the city that are suitable for those wanting to party, for the most part there is a very laidback and friendly atmosphere. We had no worries being out after dark with our young kids.
Of course, the entire Caribbean is famous for its beaches, but there’s a good reason why the Dominican Republic takes the #1 spot for the most visited Caribbean nation. Its beaches are very calm and clear, so ideal for little ones who aren’t strong swimmers.
There is plenty to do just in La Romana, however if you want to have some additional adventures, there are some fantastic daytrip options. Our favorite was heading out to nearby Saona Island, an unspoiled paradise. We felt like a real family of explorers as we set off on the boat and made it to the gorgeous shores of the island to enjoy some swimming and a tasty lunch.
My wife and I are big foodies, but alas our kids would be happiest eating an exclusive diet of chicken nuggets and white bread. Amazingly, we actually had them enjoying the fresh fruit that is on offer so widely in La Romana. It was a perfect (and healthy) option for fuss-free family lunches.
Nothing says “blissful family holiday” like watching the sun dip below the ocean’s horizon from your hotel balcony, perhaps while enjoying a lovely dinner or playing some board games. The sunsets in La Romana were particularly beautiful, and made a gorgeous backdrop for some happy snaps as a family.
One of my favorite things about family vacations is definitely all the fun and action-packed activities you get to enjoy. La Romana has so many that are perfect for kids (and the-kids-at-heart). From horseback riding to going on a ‘Caribbean safari’ and enjoying a catamaran cruise, there are just so many things to do in La Romana. Best of all, the variety means that it’s a great destination for kids of all ages, from toddlers through to teens (and their parents, of course!)
