Margarita Island off of Venezuela’s coast has long been a special place for my husband and I. It was one of the first places we vacationed together after we got married, and it’s long been somewhere we’ve wanted to take our kids.
We finally got the chance this summer, when we headed off for a week on the island. While the main activity on Margarita Island is relaxing and enjoying quality time together, there are also some fun activities to keep the little ones occupied. Here are our favorite five things we did as a family.

One thing about Margarita Island is that the seas can be quite rough, so our kids actually did most of their swimming in the hotel pool. However, we did visit the beaches and our kids loved building sandcastles on the shore of Playa El Yaque. We also headed out a little bit further to Playa Manzillo, which was beautiful and had nice warm waters.
The star attraction of Waterland is the resident dolphins. Our son was old enough to actually swim with them, while our daughter just loved the opportunity to get up close.
For me, one of the most important parts of having a fun and stress-free family holiday is choosing the right accommodation. We always like to stay in resorts that are designed with families in mind, so there is fun stuff for the kids to do and we don’t have to worry about keeping too quiet! We loved the pools and kid’s club at our resort, which we exchanged for on Zurfers.
Both of our kids love animals, and my husband and I love the outdoors, so we definitely wanted to go and explore the wildlife-rich region of Laguna de la Restinga. This mangrove area has lots of animals and plants, so we also thought it would be good for the kids to learn more about the animals that are native to Venezuela.
It can get pretty hot on Margarita Island, so we were definitely happy to return for another fun day at Parque Al Agua, another waterpark on the island. Aside from several huge pools, the park also has some fun attractions that are great for kids (and grown-ups) of all ages. Our favorite was floating down the manmade lagoon on an inflatable raft. Although we preferred the calmer activities, there are also a lot of adrenaline attractions that would be perfect for teenagers!
