When you think of Cancun, wild spring break celebrations may be the first things that come to mind. However, Cancun is actually a brilliant destination for families to visit as well. Most of the parties in Cancun happen after dark in bars and nightclubs, so chances are you won’t even come across them if you travel to Cancun with kids.
We recently had a great trip to Cancun on a trip with our kids and my sister and brother-in-law. The adults loved the amazing food and tropical cocktails, while my sister and I managed to sneak off for a relaxing massage. Equally, our kids came home raving about their time and the experiences. Here were five of our favorite family focused activities that Cancun had to offer.

Cancun has lots of amazing animal experiences that were especially perfect for my daughter, who absolutely loves animals. Some highlights for us were swimming with sea turtles in the wild (about an hour-and-a-half from Cancun in Akumal), and wild dolphin watching near Contoy Island. There are also some great aquariums that were both fun and educational for the kids (and us too!)
Of course, Cancun’s beaches are one of the biggest reasons we visited, and our kids absolutely loved them! We had so much fun swimming in the stunning waters, and even got to play a game of beach soccer together. One particular highlight for the kids was buying fresh coconuts to drink out of on the beach.
We had a blast visiting some of Cancun’s many eco parks. We love natural theme parks and the ones in Cancun were spectacular. We were able to partake in all kinds of activities, including ziplining, cave exploring, and swimming in natural cenotes.
We stayed at an all-inclusive resort in the Hotel Area, and it was a huge hit with both of our kids. They loved the resort’s huge pool, and also loved the playground. There was even a kid’s club where they could meet some other kids their age, while my husband and I got to relax and spent some grown-up time together. There are definitely plenty of family-friendly resorts in Cancun, and they are really good value for money.
Color me shocked! I was not really expecting my kids to enjoy the shopping in Cancun, but I was pleasantly surprised. We’d given each of our kids a little bit of spending money for the trip, and they had a lot of fun picking out some souvenirs from the markets to keep and to give to their friends. In particular, the colorful figurines and wooden puzzle toys were big hits. Of course, I also enjoyed the shopping as well – so it was fun for the whole family!
