La Romana in the Dominican Republic has a reputation as a honeymoon hotspot, but I decided to check it out as a solo traveler. It’s certainly not only couples who can enjoy the beauty of La Romana’s beaches, as well as the cultural and adrenaline activities on offer. After four glorious days in La Romana, I can definitely say that it’s a great place for everyone, whether you’re traveling alone, as a couple, or part of a larger group!
Here’s how I spent four amazing days in La Romana.
When I travel, I love to find the local spots and immerse myself in the different cultures. In order to find out more about life and traditions in the Dominican Republic, I joined a tour to the countryside of Bayahibe. It was amazing to see how different things are away from the fancy resorts – life is very humble and slow, which reminded me to slow down and enjoy life a little more at times!
The waters around La Romana are so clear that it’s the perfect area for snorkeling and diving. Unfortunately, I can’t dive (yet) but luckily there are a number of great snorkeling tours to try instead. After talking with my hotel, I decided on a visit to Catalina Island for my third day, with a PADI certified snorkel company. As part of the tour, I visited a private beach on the island, where I spent the day relaxing on the shores and snorkeling in the amazing waters.
For my last day in La Romana, I visited Plantation, a beautiful home set amongst a historical plantation. As part of the tour, I got to sample some local Caribbean flavors, including coffee, cocoa and rum – all of which were delicious (especially since I am a huge coffee lover!). But perhaps the highlight of the trip was visiting “Monkeyland”, a large property owned by an animal-loving Canadian couple who care for some very inquisitive and friendly monkeys. They run free, and seem to really love interacting with humans.
I was so glad I managed to squeeze the tour in, before spending a few hours at the beach. I managed to squeeze in a little more beach time in the late afternoon before returning home feeling totally relaxed and restored – and very glad I decided to visit La Romana as a solo traveler.
